Goodwill Scrapbook, Page 5

"Marilynn, Linda, Skipper"

"Marilyn, 11 years"

"Larry - 11-12 years"

"Cheryl & kitten - '52"

"Me, Grandma '51"

I love the young lady in the bottom photo - her hairstyle, her shy smile, her beautiful dress, but most of all, the way her feet are turned in (she was probably nervous about having her picture taken).

Maybelline advertisement, and then some!

When I first decided to post this advertisement for Maybelline, I was going to make a silly comment about their choice of words - "NOTHING does so much for a woman" ...

Then I started reading the story about womens' intuition that is covering most of the page. These stories about Doris Day, Natalie Wood and Jane Wyman made me stop cold.

Be sure to enlarge this page and read about these wonderful women and their experiences with intuition. Hair-raising!

Advertisement, 1956, Toward The Unknown

Toward the Unknown, 1956 - "This high-flying thriller uses footage of the USAF Thunderbirds in action--an interesting and authentic look into the world of Air Force test pilots. Set at Edwards Air Force base in California, the story centers on a dishonored pilot who is no longer allowed to fly. It seems that as a Korean POW he was brutally tortured and brainwashed until he could bear no more and he eventually cracked. Though it has been many years, he wants to clear his name and fly again. Unfortunately a general fears the pilot could again lose it during the testing of a highly experimental plan. Fortunately, the general's secretary is the former girl friend of the pilot and she convinces the general that he is rock solid. The pilot then sets out to prove it for himself. James Garner made his big screen debut in this film."

1949 Adventure in Baltimore

Adventure in Baltimore, 1949 - "In 1905, teenaged Dinah Sheldon is an aspiring artist and budding suffragette. This is sufficiently scandalous, though her minister father takes a more lenient view. But her imaginative painting, showing a young male friend with exposed chest and (ahem) limbs, really blows the roof off."

My, how times have changed!!

"Larry '49 - Did You Fall Over?"

"Cheryl, Lyle, Bobby '49"

"Marilynn"

These shots are so precious - especially the first one ... the look of utter joy on poor Larry's face as he falls over ... well, it's just too cute!

Goodwill Scrapbook, Page 2

"Donnie & Marilynn"

"Jerry's 8th Birthday Party"

The first photo is my favorite of this set - mostly because of the little girl and the dog standing on rounds of wood being cute.

Treasures from Goodwill Scrapbook

Larry & Jim

I love the old jeans they are wearing. And the way the shadow depicts a very old-fashioned camera!

Larry and Gene at Gene & Aunt Lenora's

I found a scrapbook at the Goodwill Surplus store some time back. The pictures had been removed. As I paged through, I noticed several pages in the middle were stuck together. I pulled them apart, and found more than 20 old photos that someone missed. I pulled them out and bought them, because I couldn't bear to have them shredded.

I will start with these, and hopefully post more as I can.

German Countryside

I found this photo in my box of pictures that got wet from a dripping roof.

What memories! This was taken from the balcony of the apartment I lived in while in Germany. We could look off across the field, and liked to watch the high speed train that raced through several times a day.

Once we watched a hot air balloon drift over the field and out of sight.

More Fun With Old Advertisements

I think maybe these ads weren't put on this page at random.

Because apparently you can by a "Nite of Love" for $2.49 ... Of course that would be AFTER you were able to "Round Out ... Firm Up ... YOUR NATURAL BOSOM"!

I'm not sure if the Six-Piece Home Altar would be effective Before the "Nite of Love" with the Firmed Up Bosom ....

Or after.

Psychedelic Ocean

I found a box of my old photos.
They had gotten dripped on.
Most were ruined.
Like this.

Then I noticed ... what interesting patterns
Kind of like having a psychedelic frame!

I don't feel quite so bad now ...
Although I lost a lot of pictures,
I still have memories.
and ART!

Shopping List

I found this shopping list in my grocery cart last week.
I just had to laugh ...

Plavix (helps to prevent blood clots due to cholesterol issues).

Now the shopping list ...

Crackers (usually lots of fat)

Cheese (oh yeah!)

Pretzels (not so bad but more fat than you think)

Chips (the worst!)

Grapes (okay, must have at least 1 healthy item, just in case my doctor finds this list)

Drinks (not so much fat but lots of sodium and sugar)

And Last But Not Least ...
(after all those snacks)

A toothbrush (maybe to get rid of demon Dorito breath?)

I wonder if any of my shopping lists ever made someone giggle hysterically???
Somehow I wouldn't be surprised.

Found at Goodwill ...

When I go to the Goodwill Outlet store, I always look for interesting bits of paper that end up in the bottom of the bins.

This is a sampling of what I found when I made the trek to Salem last Sunday.

Advertising for a rain bonnet ... a package of Marigold seeds, A Disney playing card of Dewey, and a note proclaiming that Bailey loves me.

Not bad for 89 cents a pound.

"All-In-One"

I'm not sure why, but this ad just cracked me up! The things we women have gone through for the sake of "beauty" and being slender.

And the built-in torpedo bra!!!

Must have been invented by a man!

Snicker, snort.

Lustre-Creme Shampoo

My mom picked this ad out from my found box of clippings.
It was a nostalgic moment.
You see, she used Lustre-Creme Shampoo ... it was something her mom bought for her. She used it from the time she was a child all through her teenaged years.

Maybe that's why she still has such beautiful hair???

1960 Magazine Ad - Song Without End

This movie came out in 1960, and was heralded for its fantastic musical score. It follows the life of Franz Liszt, renowned 18th century musician/pianist/composer. The movie won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

This ad was amongst the clippings I found at my storage unit on top of the recycle bin.

More to come!

This Find is For JANN

I found a stack of old movie magazine clippings sitting on the recycle bin at my storage unit.

Most were dated from the '50's and '60's. Naturally, I snagged them and brought them home!!!

There are thousands here - I have only begun to glance through them! This stack is over 6" high!!!

I found myself thinking of a good friend as I leafed through these clippings - someone who would appreciate them as much as I do. Jann, this find is for you!!!

I may blog some of the more fun pages (okay, I like the old advertisements best) in the future, and every time I do, I will think of you. Thank you for the friendship and inspiration you give. I treasure you and your blog.

In The Sky

So ... what are the odds of this?

Mom reading "Pie in the Sky" (Patricia Condon Johnston).

Dad reading "Farmer in the Sky" (Robert A. Heinlein).

At the same time?

Shhhhhh!

I finally tracked down the elusive "boobus-toobus", long known to frequent these woods; hiding behind the sword ferns near the creek.

It must be a young one -- its umbilical cord is still attached!

Quite a "moving picture", isn't it?

I will leave it alone. And I will tell no one.

I will name it "Ann Alog".

Shhhhhhh.

Something is hidden in this picture.
Do you see it?
Enjoying the rare fall flowers
That survived the slight frost.

Hint ... look for the goldfinch!

I don't remember how I came into possession of this silverware replacement guarantee from 1931.

I just wish I had the silverware to go along with it!

1916 Mothers Magazine, The Strange Case of Mary Page

The Strange Case of Mary Page was a black and white, silent, 15 part series (made for the big screen). It apparently made quite a hit, with both good and not-so-good reviews.

Hmmmm I wonder who really did kill the drunken Dave Pollock? I'll probably never know.

1918 YMCA Christmas Greetings, WWI

I found this YMCA Christmas 1918 greeting in Grammie's stuff.
Her husband, my Grampa Lester, was a veteran of WWI.
He must have received this while overseas that year.
I think it must have meant a lot to him.
And to her.
To me as well.

1916 Mothers Magazine, Colgate's Ribbon Dental Cream

"It is much better to take pains with your teeth than to have your teeth taken with pains."
So true in 1916 ... so true today!

Tale of the Wandering Wallet

There is a story here ...
Late one night (around midnight) I heard a commotion at the abandoned church across the street. I went outside to listen. What I heard was ... dozens of flip-flops ... running full tilt down the road. Yep, a whole herd of teenagers apparently spooked themselves in the building and were running for their lives. Snicker.

The next morning I saw something on the road leading up to the building. It was a wallet! I picked it up and found it belonged to a 16-year-old high school student from a nearby town. Presumably one of the runners.

I called the police and told them what had happened. Twenty minutes later a deputy showed up and took possession of the wallet. He said he looked forward to locating the owner. I told him he should look for the owner's parents instead ... the deputy snickered and said 'yeah, that's what I meant". Boy would I have liked to have been a fly on the wall listening to that particular conversation!!!

1916 Mothers Magazine, Layette Pattern

What a cute layette pattern for a brand new baby. Too bad they don't sell patterns for a dime anymore!

Paper Dolls

This delightful paper doll cowboy is shootin' for your affection.

I love the innocence the artist somehow caught in the glance of this cute little firegirl.

Lead me to the rodeo! This little cowgirl is quite flirty isn't she?

I'm not sure where these paper dolls came from. I found them in my boxes of paper "stuff" I have been trying to go through and organize. They are made out of heavy paper, and it is a wonder they survived without falling apart.

1961 Direct Distance Dialing

At 11 PM on May 20, 1961, telephone service in Portland, Oregon changed forever. No longer did a person making a long distance call have to dial the operator, give them the number they were trying to reach, and wait for a connection.

And you gotta love the rotary phones they had!

Some of my early telephone memories involve rotary phones and "party lines". Phone service has come a long way since then!
