More B/W Negative Shots

I have finally processed more photos from the black-n-white negative strips I found at the Goodwill.

Here is another shot of the quarry(?).

The Garden Magazine, Nov. 1917

The magazine had no cover, and was ragged and stained.

Still, something about it caught my eye, so I paid my 25 cents and came home with a treasure trove of old advertisements and a glimpse into the world of nearly a hundred years ago!

In total, I came home with tattered and coverless copies of this magazine from 1913, 1914, 1915 and 1917!!!

All for a dollar.

The first thing I scanned from the pages of my treasure was this "Stewarts Iron Fence" advertisement. Because ... It's time for "Fridays Fences"!

Found in a Book ...

I love books!

Reading a book ... a real paper-and-ink publication ... is like losing myself in another world.

Or visiting an old friend.

Sometimes I find treasures tucked between the pages ...

Notes, cards, bookmarks ...

I'm not sure I will ever be comfortable with reading books "electronically".

Because there's more to books than just reading them!

More Found Negatives ...

One of the things I can't resist snatching up at the Goodwill Outlet Store are negatives.

It's like finding buried treasure!

I picked up several black and white negative strips the last time I was there, and have been working on digitizing them.

 

Some of the shots look like they were taken at an old quarry.

Maybe someone's vacation shots?

 

There were also several views of this old fence.

I picked up several packets of negatives (not 35 mm - they were much larger!) at the thrift store the other day ...

I couldn't wait to digitize them!

On the first strip, I came across someone's memories of a trip to the beach.

And these beautiful girls.

 With a hint as to the time frame of these photos ...

Their outfits are straight out of the 1970's, don't you think?

Whoever took these photos did well at catching something really special ...

The Celebrated Marseilles Hymn

(I was going through some of the "treasures" I bought at a local thrift store, when I came across this piece of sheet music. I had picked it up because the writing on it looked old. It is in relatively poor shape; the edges are slightly ragged, there are stains throughout, and the writing on the front has begun to fade. It appears that there used to be a cover of some kind, which has been removed)

I was curious about this sheet music, and found this Wikipedia Entry. Apparently this song is the National Anthem of France!

Then I did an image search to see if I could find another copy of this sheet music ...

The only one I found (that appears to be identical!) is located

in the Levy Sheet Music Collection

at Johns Hopkins University.

I have no idea if this is an historically significant piece of ephemera or not.

It seems like it may be so!

I'm just not sure where to go from here. If it is a historically significant document, then it should be placed with someone who can preserve it as such. I hear the University of Oregon has our state's largest sheet music collection. I am contemplating contacting them to see if they would know what I should do.

Elvis - Seen at the Thrift Store!!!

I got the opportunity to bring my sister-in-law to a local thrift store yesterday to do a couple hours' shopping.

I came home with some AMAZING treasures (the best of which I will be sharing over the next few days).

One of the treasures I found was this vinyl single ...

Big Horn Sheep

 Back in the mid- to late 1990's my (ex) husband and I were stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. One of my co-workers' husband worked with the Forest Service, and we were invited to tag along as they enticed a herd of bighorn sheep down from the hills ... 

We drove up to the site, went through the gate and up to a flat spot just below "The Scar". Those of you who know Colorado Springs know about "The Scar".

The purpose was to medicate these beauties (medicines were laced into the apple parts that were in buckets).

The herd showed up shortly after we did - I had never seen a bighorn sheep up this close - they were powerful and awe inspiring.

More and more of them showed up, racing down "The Scar" for their treats.

My kids and I will never forget that day!

This is a photo I found taken yesterday by a "citizen journalist". This is "The Scar" - where all those bighorn sheep live.

The area is threatened by a huge forest fire - 

Homes and businesses have burned ... or are in peril.

Wild animals are roaming through town.

I wonder if the bighorn sheep are some of them?

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Colorado Springs.

The Side of the Road ...

I almost threw this picture away.

I found it in Grandma G's album of a road trip she and Grandpa G took in 1981.

The shot was taken next to a road ...

Somewhere in the Southwest US.

It looked rather boring and plain.

Then I looked closer. At the little windmill in the center. At the dry creek bed, and the tire tracks going up the hill behind ...

I noticed the sagebrush and imagined the scent ...

Then I noticed the split beam guardrail. Wow. No metal here!

I decided this is a picture worth keeping.

Do You "Can Kerr"?

I've been busy scanning my "found recipe" collection ...

One of the recipe pamphlets I came across is this "Kerr Guide to Home Canning and Freezing" - complete with an advertisement for Kerr canning products.

I haven't canned anything for a couple of years ...

But the last time I went to the store for canning supplies, people looked at me in awe.

Who cans anymore???

You'd think I was an alien whose spaceship was parked just around the corner!

Well ... canning is something I love to do - when I have the time.

There's nothing quite so refreshing as popping open a jar of home canned tomatoes in the dead of winter ...

Home Sweet Home Away From Home ...

I don't know any of these then-young soldiers ...

Since this picture was taken by my (ex) husband ...

Somewhere in the world ...

Sometime in the 1980's or early 1990's ...

These guys are probably retired by now.
Hopefully they returned from the war(s) safe ...

And are now playing cards with their buddies in a larger space!
And maybe a "cold one" at their side!

A Different Kind of "Find"!

I found a pair of kids pants stashed on a shelf in the laundry room ...
The pants were quite ragged - and they no longer fit anyone around here anyway!

I decided to play with them, instead of throwing them away. But what to do???

With the help of a bottle of dishwashing soap, scissors, a button and some thread ...

It's a soap apron!

I'm going to have to see if I can "find" another pair of old kids pants! Or maybe an unused shirt ... or something dug out of the "mending" pile ... or !!!
The possibilities are endless!

I've always loved this shot taken by my (ex) husband when we were stationed in Germany in the mid to late 1980s.

It looks like the Bradley is trying to hide behind the trees!!!

I can't help picking up random pieces of paper next to the road ... I never know what curiosities I will find.

Like this note printed on a torn manilla folder ...

I hope whoever got the note remembered to turn the water back off!!!

Family Photo - 1959

I found this old photo in Grammie's album ...
Dated September 1959, it would appear that my cousin David got a brand new tricycle for his 2nd birthday!!!

My favorite part about this picture though, is Uncle Lawrence.
I always thought, growing up, that he was the most handsome man in the world.

I've been going through my collection of hand-written recipes, trying to get them all scanned, and came across this gem. There is a hand-written recipe (in crayon!) on the front side, and that was what had first caught my attention.

When I realized what this was I had to laugh.
It reminds me of the ending of an old joke ...
"If we don't pay the burial bill, up she comes!"

I was at a Goodwill store a couple of years ago, trying to score a 3-ring binder that I needed. When I opened one, this paper drifted out.

I didn't end up buying the binder, but I just had to keep the treasure that had been inside!

Family Letter - Found at Goodwill

I found this partial letter in a bin at the Goodwill Outlet Store sometime back ...
What a wonderful letter - I only wish the first half of it had been there!

"-ses who pose for some clothes (fashion), jewels, necklaces, lipsticks, makeup, products, fragrances, creams, etc ... also I get some cinema's books, I like period "Great Hollywood" with Marilyn Monroe, my idol, John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Rita Hayworth, Audrey Hepburn, Tippi Bedson (?), Nathalie Wood, Lana Turner, etc ... It was golden age of the cinema, also I like aeronautic and space, history: The First and Second World War.
I'm very happy to have received a letter from you and to hear my gift was pleased you a lot.
I hope you're in good health and work well at school.

Even though this letter does not have a heart, it is FULL of heart ... and therefore I am going to link it up with "Guest Heart Thursday!"

Found Old Photo

I was at a church rummage sale last Saturday, when I saw two old photos. They were printed on heavy cardboard, and someone had at one point used glue on the edges to hold them into their frames (now missing). The center parts of the photos were still in relatively good shape.

I fell in love with the photos, but they were way over my budget.

At noon the people running the rummage sale kicked everybody out of the building. Then we all lined up outside, and were handed paper bags. "$3.00 for anything you can fit in this bag".

Since I was first in line I was first in the door ... can you guess where I went first? - straight to the vintage photos that were still on the table of course! Then I filled the rest of my bag.

When I got home I looked more carefully at this particular photo - fascinated by the lady's dress ... and the gentleman's pose with his hand tucked into his coat.

I know nothing more about these pictures - there is no marking on the front or back that would help me identify these people, where they came from, or when the portrait was taken.

So now they will be re-framed and hung in my room, to become part of my extended family!

Any ideas as to what I should name them???
