1934-35 Motion Picture Almanac

Those who know me know I love our local thrift store's surplus store.

I can spend hours perusing the bins, then pay for the treasures I find "by the pound".

 (It's only been recently that this wonderful store discovered that people love books - and started charging for them separately. $2 for hardbacks; $1 for paperbacks.)

But back to the story ... as a special birthday treat to myself, I spent several hours a couple of days ago at the local bin store.

 As the workers rolled in a couple of bins filled with books, the "vultures" descended ... at least 6 people, electronic gadgets in hand, scanning barcodes ... unwanted books flying in their wake. (I'm assuming these people have an app from our local bookstore that buys certain used books).

After the vultures moved on, leaving chaos in their wake, I moved in; and found an old-looking book without a cover. I love to take these broken books (already destined for the shredder) apart to use for arts and crafts.

Then, 2 bins down, I found the cover.

The name "Darryl Zanuck" embossed in silver on the bottom, and a handwritten note "this page 50" captured my curiosity.

On the flyleaf was a signature - "Marguerite Doss - Patricia Archer"

This is Page 50, bookmarked with an address label for Marguerite.

And under the listing for "Archer, Patricia", is the notation "ME".

Of course I bought this amazing book ... $2 seemed like a small price for such a treasure!

Dad and His Little Sister ...

Tears filled her eyes when she handed me this stained and tattered old photo ... the only one she could find of her beloved older brother.

I know she misses him too.

 

This photo is probably from mid- to late 1930's - and is this week's contribution to  "Vintage Weekly" 

 

Lost Treasures ...

I found a negative strip in a bin at the thrift store, and couldn't resist picking it up. Somebody's memories are here.

When I processed the "negative to positive", I couldn't help but wonder ...

Who is this guy leaning against the hewn log fence?

Why are these ladies all bundled up in sleeping bags?

I wonder what happened to those gorgeous old water pitchers?

And don't you just love this guy's socks???

A beloved pet?

Is she laughing?

Or crying?

Where is she now?

So many questions ... I will never know the answers to.

Sigh.

Found Photo - Larry and Jim

I hate seeing old photos in the bins at the thrift outlet store. I know the next stop for these treasures is the shredder.

I found this cute shot of "Larry & Jim Balder", along with several other vintage (1940's and 1950's) photos a couple of years ago.

I never really noticed the shadows before ...

I can almost picture that photographer, with the big clunky camera and the gigantic flash on top ...

A Marigold Treasure Chest

I found this "treasure chest" in a bin at the Surplus Store ... and couldn't resist the precious artwork.

These marigold seeds were packaged for the 1986 growing season, and apparently sold to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

I wonder if they would still grow if I planted them???

I had to smile as well at the hearts I found ... in the leaves of the potted plant; in the spade propped up in the pot just behind the little gardener ...

Bade's Restaurant

As I was going through Dad's photos, I came across a bunch that were dated 1946-1949, Oscoda Air Base, Michigan. Nearly all of them had "Bade's Gang" written on the back.

It wasn't until I came across this particular shot that I realized what "Bade's Gang" was referring to!

When I looked closer, I had to smile at the prices ...

Old Fences in Old Pictures

I found an album dated "1946-1949" from "Selfridge Air Base" in with Dad's papers.

There were so many pictures I have never seen before ... from a time Dad tried to forget ... and struggled to remember at the same time.

These were apparently taken on an "R&R" trip to Boiling Springs PA from Carlisle Barracks PA (Dad went to MP School there in 1947).

These soldiers must be ready to go swimming in the pool behind the fence ... note the rolled up towels under their arms!

It's "Friday Fences" time!

I found this photo of Dad in a tiny photo album.

It was dated "1946 to 1949, Oscoda Air Base, Michigan".

I had never seen these photos before.

Europe 1978, Part 2

I couldn't figure out why this picture was included amongst the beautiful travel photos in the "Europe 1978" albums I found at the Goodwill.

Then I saw the sign ... and realized this was a Bed and Breakfast that  "anonymous" apparently stayed at on their whirlwind trip through Europe (in the Ireland portion of their album).

And it's not often I find a photo that encompasses so many of the memes I love ...

There are "hearts" in the fence and gate if you look closely.

 There's the "fence" itself.

There's the B&B "sign".

That bottom window has interesting "reflections" ...

And this is definitely a "Vintage" photo!

Did I miss any?

 

Europe 1978, Part 1

I couldn't believe it when I found 2 photo albums at the Goodwill Outlet Store ... full of wonderful pictures from someone's trip to Europe.

On the flyleaf of each album is written  "Europe 1978". There are no other identifying marks. Some of the photos have small typewritten identification tags, but most are missing. I have had a blast trying to identify some of the more famous places!

This is one of the shots taken in Ireland ...don't you just love the contrast of the cart being driven past the car?

The albums include shots from: Ireland, England, France and Italy.

I can't imagine how they ended up at the Goodwill.

But ... someone's loss is my gain!!!

Pepi le Piu

I was grinning at "Beth's Artworx" - and Sissie's whimsical drawing of her 1964 VW Bug.

And I knew what I had to do!!!

I had to search until I found this picture of Sissie and her car (with the most awesome name of "Pepi le Piu Flea Longstock, Jr. (aka stinky little furry feet, the second)" - taken during a snowstorm back in the 70's.

Stonehenge (USA) Postcard and Photo

I got this postcard a long time ago, because we used to travel frequently through the Columbia Gorge - and stopped at Stonehenge whenever we could. It has always fascinated me!

"Washington state's replica of Stonehenge was built by entrepreneur Samuel Hill as a memorial to the soldiers of Klickitat County who gave their lives in WWI.  Construction of Stonehenge was started in 1918 and completed in 1929."

On one of our trips to Stonehenge, probably in the mid 1980's, I used my small pocket camera to snap these two pictures ... which, thanks to the digital age, I have now stitched together into one shot.

More Found Negatives!

I finally processed some more of the negatives I found at the Goodwill a couple of months ago. The shots were from a trip someone took to an abandoned quarry. Some of the pictures appear to be from the 1960's or 1970's, so I'm assuming these shots are from that same time frame.

 

I'm not sure why this picture was taken of the trash can ...but there is nice scenery in the background!

It looks like someone was building something?

Or maybe tearing down an old shed???

I haven't participated in "Vintage Weekly" for a while, but I figured it was about time!!!

Found Sign on Graffiti

My friend Matt, who does security work at "The Abandoned", was attempting to weld a metal plate onto the entrance to "the tunnel" - to keep out thrill seekers who think it's haunted ...

He asked me if I could keep an eye on his equipment while he went to the shop to get some more supplies. Of course! - what a wonderful opportunity to hang out and admire some of the artwork in the ruined sanctuary.

I had to laugh, though, when I found this piece of notebook paper taped to one of the large graffiti murals.

Marriage Proposal ...

It was just a piece of folded yellowed paper, tucked into a book at a thrift store.

When I opened it up and read it, I giggled in awe.

And wondered how someone could have thrown this one away!

I wish I knew the story behind this delightful marriage proposal.

The Garden Magazine, Nov. 1917

The magazine had no cover, and was ragged and stained.

Still, something about it caught my eye, so I paid my 25 cents and came home with a treasure trove of old advertisements and a glimpse into the world of nearly a hundred years ago!

In total, I came home with tattered and coverless copies of this magazine from 1913, 1914, 1915 and 1917!!!

All for a dollar.

The first thing I scanned from the pages of my treasure was this "Stewarts Iron Fence" advertisement. Because ... It's time for "Fridays Fences"!

Found in a Book ...

I love books!

Reading a book ... a real paper-and-ink publication ... is like losing myself in another world.

Or visiting an old friend.

Sometimes I find treasures tucked between the pages ...

Notes, cards, bookmarks ...

I'm not sure I will ever be comfortable with reading books "electronically".

Because there's more to books than just reading them!

More Found Negatives ...

One of the things I can't resist snatching up at the Goodwill Outlet Store are negatives.

It's like finding buried treasure!

I picked up several black and white negative strips the last time I was there, and have been working on digitizing them.

 

Some of the shots look like they were taken at an old quarry.

Maybe someone's vacation shots?

 

There were also several views of this old fence.
