1961 Direct Distance Dialing

At 11 PM on May 20, 1961, telephone service in Portland, Oregon changed forever. No longer did a person making a long distance call have to dial the operator, give them the number they were trying to reach, and wait for a connection.

And you gotta love the rotary phones they had!

Some of my early telephone memories involve rotary phones and "party lines". Phone service has come a long way since then!

My Granddaddy had a party line! We always used to sneak around and try to listen to the other people talking on it, but they always knew what we were doing and told on us!

I remember those partylines! Remember Mrs. Hood (first pioneer woman to settle in the upper Willamette Valley--and what stories she had to tell) was on ours, and we would sometimes listen in. Heh.
