Shipyard Contrast

I found this old photo tucked into an old photo album at the thrift store, and felt it would be an appropriate "find" for today - Veterans Day!

I was intrigued by the two ships - a brilliant white cruise ship docked next to a dark gray military ship of some kind. I'm not sure when the photo was taken, but it seems to me both cruise ships and military ships are all much, much larger now.

I am linking this with "Vintage Weekly" ... for the first time in a long time!

Dad and His Little Sister ...

Tears filled her eyes when she handed me this stained and tattered old photo ... the only one she could find of her beloved older brother.

I know she misses him too.

This photo is probably from mid- to late 1930's - and is this week's contribution to  "Vintage Weekly"

Found Photo - Larry and Jim

I hate seeing old photos in the bins at the thrift outlet store. I know the next stop for these treasures is the shredder.

I found this cute shot of "Larry & Jim Balder", along with several other vintage (1940's and 1950's) photos a couple of years ago.

I never really noticed the shadows before ...
I can almost picture that photographer, with the big clunky camera and the gigantic flash on top ...

Trying to get a couple of kids to stand still!

Found Old Photo

I was at a church rummage sale last Saturday, when I saw two old photos. They were printed on heavy cardboard, and someone had at one point used glue on the edges to hold them into their frames (now missing). The center parts of the photos were still in relatively good shape.

I fell in love with the photos, but they were way over my budget.

At noon the people running the rummage sale kicked everybody out of the building. Then we all lined up outside, and were handed paper bags. "$3.00 for anything you can fit in this bag".

Since I was first in line I was first in the door ... can you guess where I went first? - straight to the vintage photos that were still on the table of course! Then I filled the rest of my bag.

When I got home I looked more carefully at this particular photo - fascinated by the lady's dress ... and the gentleman's pose with his hand tucked into his coat.

I know nothing more about these pictures - there is no marking on the front or back that would help me identify these people, where they came from, or when the portrait was taken.

So now they will be re-framed and hung in my room, to become part of my extended family!

Any ideas as to what I should name them???

I am also linking this to "Vintage Weekly" - come join us to see wonderful old photos!!!

Found Heart on Old Photo

Back in 1980 I took one of those pre-packaged trips to Hawaii with my friend Nadine. What a fun week it was!
The package included a "Luau", and we had a blast.

I recently found the photos from that trip, and as I scanned them, I noticed a random heart. Do you see it?

Pear Avenue

This is another photo (Polaroid this time!) that I found in Grampa and Grandma G's old photo album from their Western US road trip back in the late early 1980's.

The tiny sign in the middle of this barren looking area reads ...
"Pear Ave".
I don't see any pear trees ...
But then it doesn't look much like an "avenue" to me either!

1943 Found Photo

My friend Randy is helping a lady move out of an old farm house. Since he is a truck driver, she asked him to bring a load of garbage to the dump.

After dropping off the load, he looked in the back of the truck and found this photo that had fallen out of one of the bags (the back is stamped "1943").
When I showed it to Dad, he exclaimed "Oh! That looks just like one of the Army barracks I stayed at before I went overseas during WWII!"

He pointed out the bedrolls ("we ALL had to roll them just like that"), and the helmets at the ends of the cots ("where we hung our rucksacks"). He also pointed out the old stove ("boy did that stove pipe get hot") and the cots themselves ("they were the most uncomfortable beds I ever slept on - metal mesh stretched over frames. Sometimes the mesh would break, and you would get poked all night by the sharp ends")

I can't believe someone would throw away this bit of history, but I'm ecstatic that Randy found it and thought of me.

And I am even more in awe of those military veterans who endured so much and gave so much.
Thank you to ALL veterans.
Even though Thank You is not enough ...

Another Found Family Photo

I found this adorable picture in the stuff my uncle brought over after Grammie went to heaven. This is my dear darling sister - back in the 1st grade!!! She would have been about 6 years old.
Isn't she cute? I was always jealous of her long flowing hair (still am!), while mine was dry, frizzy and short. Sigh.

And don't you just love the outfit she was wearing?

I missed last week's "Sunday Scans", but now I am back! I am so thankful to Al for hosting this wonderful meme! Like I said last time, it would probably have been years before I looked in the box that held so many wonderful family treasures and photos. Thank you, Al, Thank you!!!

P.S. Al, Sissie Beth's computer up and died, and she wanted you to know she will be back to Sunday Scans as soon as possible!

Trees of Mystery ...

This is another picture I found in Grampa and Granda G's travel album.
As before, I don't know the date this was taken ... sometime in the 1970's or 1980's.
But this time I do know WHERE it was taken -
Do you see the little sign peeking out between the legs of the statue?

Shadows on Rocks ...

Another picture I found in Grandma G's travel album, from a trip they took sometime in the late 1970's or early 1980's. The trip took them from Oregon to Idaho and on to Arizona.

Even though the photo is old and the location obscure ... it is still beautiful.

The rocks are probably still there ...
Only the shadows will be different.

Hosed!

I was reading a book I found at a used book sale some time back. As I flipped through the pages, this precious photo dropped out.

I am sorry someone lost it, but not sorry that it came home to me!
